We receive requests for help from people like Marjorie on almost a weekly basis.

Many times, we sadly are unable to help, but we do try to mediate with other Charities for a positive outcome.

We were contacted in May of 2024 by a lovely lady called Marjorie, from Northumberland.

Marjorie had owned two Shetland ponies, Bella and Barney for more than 25 years. She had enjoyed driving them as a pair in harness and they were both, much loved companions.

Having recently broken her collarbone whilst waiting for a hip replacement, Marjorie very wisely realised that she now had limitations and asked Here4Horses for help. She could no longer face the struggle of dealing with their day-to-day care.

We recognised that a solution needed to be found, to safeguard both Marjorie and the ponies but were not in a position to help without Marjorie being prepared to give financial support.

Thankfully this was the case and arrangements were quickly made to bring the pair to us.

Ironically, within a week of arrival, we observed that they both preferred the company of other ponies – perhaps 25 years together was a few years too many!

Soon, new bonds were made with other residents here at HQ and everyone was happy.

Bella suffers from a condition called ‘Sweet Itch’ which Marjorie has managed very well with lotions, potions and expensive fly-protecting rugs.

Managing Sweet Itch well is a real commitment and we have worked hard to make her life as itch free as possible, confident that we have it under control.

Isabella (her Sunday name), much prefers the company of mares over geldings and now spends the majority of her time with our other two old ladies, Penelope and Anna.

She is now in her third decade but is fit and well, living her best life, Marjorie visits from time to time and couldn’t be happier with the outcome for her beloved ponies.
