Chequers

2012 | Piebald | Gypsy Cob | Under 15.2hh

Chequers has enjoyed several placements on our Loanie Pony scheme. Soundness issues now mean that he needs a foster home to see out his days.

We appear to have found the perfect one for him but he is ultimately our responsibility for life – potentially at least another decade. We will always need your help, in order for us to be here for Chequers when needed.

The story so far...

Chequers came to us following the tragic and untimely death of his owner in January 2020, along with Anna and Tinkerbelle. Right from the beginning he settled well to the routine despite the fact that his obesity meant that he was placed on a strict diet from day one.

Chequers stands just over 14 hands high and yet weighed a whopping 570 kilos when we first met him! Obesity in horses is surprisingly common because well cared for ponies often have access to far more grass than they actually need.

Being overweight is as serious a threat to health for horses and ponies as it is for humans and can lead to life threatening conditions.

In 2026, with big thanks to our volunteer Halcyon, we successfully matched Chequers to a lovely couple with a pony called Louis, who was desperate for a friend.

To say this has been a match made in heaven is an understatement. He enjoys all the love, care and enrichment he deserves and could ever possibly want.

This makes everyone at Here4Horses so happy.
