Percy
2010 | Grey | Shetland | Under 10hh
Back in 2019, when straying horses were commonplace, we received a call from Durham Equestrian.
They were concerned that a Shetland stallion running around the roads in their area, was terrorising the local community and was in danger of being hit by a car.
We agreed to go and help out and Percy, as we named him, was duly picked up.
If we are expected to step in and help, we can only do this with your financial support, please sponsor Percy to make this possible.
The story so far...
Shetland stallions are often a law unto themselves and Percy had acquired a particular set of skills, that he had honed, to perfection during his semi feral existence.
Our first priority therefore, was to remove him from his testosterone supply, in the hope that we could manage his ‘I have the power of 10 men’ mentality.
Sadly, this was not as successful as we’d hoped it to be and we struggled for a very long time to find his herd.
Admittedly, we even considered euthanasia at one point – as we couldn’t see a safe future for him in any other environment.
Needless to say, we still choose his friends wisely as he can be incredibly aggressive – a born fighter – when there are females to impress.
Eventually, he made a pact with Bob (another ex-stallion with attitude) and they travelled to a great foster home in Northumberland where they stayed happily for many years, enjoying the company of the other cobs who lived there too.
The property then changed hands but as luck would have it, the new owners were keen for the boys to remain – and so were we.
Then sadly, early this year, circumstances changed and it was time for the boys to return to us.
We were then almost back to square one trying to find the best field mates and neighbours, until an enquiry came in from up the dale, for a companion for a Clydesdale Mare.
We don’t ordinarily match a little with a large.
Percy however is a standard Shetland (not miniature), who keeps himself fit and well – and dare we say it, has never suffered a bout of laminitis in his life.
So, we thought this might be a potentially good match for him.
Arrangements were made and he made the trip – only to discover that his new lady friend was rather averse to small men!
At first, she behaved like he had just landed from another planet!
Percy is very capable of looking after himself, so we weren’t concerned and over the coming days and weeks the relationship has taken time to quietly blossom.
We can’t say they are best buds just yet – and who knows how long it will last – but for now, all is pretty well once again, in Percy’s world.
