Brucie

2014 | Skewbald | Shetland | Under 10hh

We are often approached by people who have found themselves in difficult situations and are no longer able to care for their animals as they would wish.

We would far rather this happens, than finding people who have continued to struggle on alone and their horses suffer as a result.

Sponsoring ponies like beautiful Brucie, means we will be able to continue to offer assistance when needed.

It really is the difference between us being able to say ‘yes we can help’ or ‘sorry, we can’t take any more into our care at this time’.

The story so far...

At the time of writing this in 2023, the pandemic seems like a distant memory. However, it is a sad fact that Covid 19 took a huge toll on people’s lives – and their businesses.

Back in December 2021 we were approached to see if we could help with a miniature Shetland suffering from chronic laminitis. This is an awful disease of the horses’ feet and is very painful. Despite being a much loved pony, the family business had gone under and with a new small family too, the situation had become completely overwhelming.

Fortunately, we were in a position to help at that time and Brucie was duly collected.

He was clearly very painful on arrival – he walked with his front legs held stiffly ‘like fence posts’, to avoid putting weight on his toes. His hooves showed evidence of bruising from the damage taking place.

Our skilled Farrier John Brannen, got to work as soon as Brucie arrived – as you can see from the images, Brucie’s heels had grown almost as long as his toes! Once carefully trimmed, his feet were in better alignment and the road to recovery began.

When he was well enough, Brucie was introduced to our Shetland herd – but it took some time for him to be fully integrated.

Thankfully, he is now living his best life with many friends and his laminitis, touch wood, is a thing of the past.

Likes:

Posing for the camera and sharing playtime with all his pals (often choosing a new best friend each day).

Dislikes:

Big horses – they don’t appreciate him like he thinks they should!
