SUMMARY:Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome) \nIt is now believed that an astonishing 50 – 90% of horses suffer from stomach ulcers. The condition is found in all types of horses and ponies but is more common in those who compete. \nResearch has proven that exercise increases stomach acid production and also decreases blood flow to the digestive tract. Add to this\, the fact that when horses exercise\, the acidic fluid in the stomach splashes onto the exposed stomach lining and the likelihood of damage increases. \nThe majority of horses with gastric ulcers do not show outward signs and can appear completely healthy. \nHowever\, the following issues can indicate a problem: \n\nUnsettled behaviour when cinching the girth up\nPoor appetite\nAnxious behaviour\nListless\nDecreased performance\nReluctance to train – tail swishing when leg applied for instance.\nPoor body condition or losing weight\nDull coat\nLow grade colic\n\nAt Here4Horses we have encountered problems in a wide range of horses. \nWe are very keen to make a difference to horses and ponies potentially suffering from this debilitating condition. We therefore intend to run a special\, week-long clinic where Gastroscopy will be offered at subsidised rates. \nOwners will need to consult with their own vet first and be happy for us to use the data collected to guide further educational work planned on this subject. \nThe clinic will start Monday June 13th and continue to Thursday June 16th if there is enough interest. \nHorses will need to travel in for the procedure. \nPlease call 07494 931744 for further information and an application form.
